Now that I haven't done. But I think you're referring to Active Documents. I haven't played with that yet but, and I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong :-), I think that it only works in IE. Something to consider if your app will run on the Internet where Netscape still prevails.
Having read the your responses to others here I'll tell you how we do what you want. We use MS Internet Information Server and Active Server Pages. We have a simple HTML form that accepts login info and then validates it against a SQL Server back end via a COM component. This way it's totally browser independent.
