KUDOS to your father! What bravery and conviction and character and integrity! The perfect example of a democracy with a judicial system serving its purpose. Also, my sympathies for what your family had to endure in the process.

>>It's not the same at all. Our constitution prohibits an active duty military person from being President at the same time.

>The same is in Argentina, but rules can be more flexible there <g>

>Even at the province level, you can not be governor if you are active duty military person according to the provincial constitutions (afaik), I know by own experience in one of the provinces where I lived when I was a kid, long, long ago. My father was one of three members of the Supreme court of a province (Justices is how they are called?), and there was a general that wanted to be elected governor, but when the case reached the SC, my father resolved that the guy could not run for governor for being an active general, this meant that for several months we had police custody in our home for the rain of threats my father received, and in the end the guy finally got what he wanted for the final verdict was in his favour 2-1 (my father giving the negative vote, the two other Justices voted in favour)
