I've never used the Spar drive, but what may be happening is that the SR1 upgrade is refusing to install to removable media. If that's the case, you'll need to change the status of the drive. If it's anything like the Jaz drive that I use, this can be done by the following under Win95/Win98:

(1) Open up Device Manager (Contrl Panel/System/Device Manager tab)
(2) Expand the Disk Drives entry and locate your SparQ drive
(3) Select your SparQ drive and open it's Properties sheet
(4) Under the Settings tab, make sure that Removable is not checked, and that Int13 Unit is checked. Save the settings and reboot.

At this point, the operating system will treat the drive as fixed media. DO NOT TRY REMOVING THE CARTRIDGE AT THIS POINT. Install SR1. After SR1 installs, you can go back into Device Manager and reset the Removable property of the drive if you wish.

This may not work if Syquest requires some strange device driver to make things work; it works fine with a SCSI Jaz drive when not using Iomega's Jaz utilities driver off an Adaptec HA.
