>Is there a way to highlight a individual word in a edit box programmatically? The purpose being I want to have a search function that can be used by the user to search for data contained in the edit box. The search utility will locate the selected data and both set the focus and highlight the data searched for.

You could, but you could highlight only ONE of them. If you have more than one occurrences and want to highlight them all you should use Rich-text ActiveX control instead of regular EditBox.
