My problem with an Id card is that it's not a stretch to extend that to a licesne, then a Social Security card, then a Get Out Of Jail Free card, and so on...

>The ID card I ALMOST agree with, if for no other reason than to track them if INS can't deal with them right now, though it screams of acceptance to me. The driver's license I totally disagree with. Damn, and I used to like Arnold...

>>Here in California, an illegal can walk into DMV and be handed a drivers license or state
>>ID card - no questions asked.

>>>And though my thread title was about paying, it's more than that. Other than the most basic health care, I don't believe anyone here illegally should be given anything. Especially a college education. How are they allowed to fill out paperwork if they are undocumented? I can't even cash a $5 check if I don't have a valid license. They should not be here. Simple.

>>>>Yes, why should universities do the Feds' job? Since they weren't doing it for decades, and let it grow to the suspected dozen millions, now they still don't want to solve it (note the two failed legislative attempts), but the GOP guys just use it as a political hotspot to divide the electoral body.
>>>>
>>>>And it's not the few hundred illegals who'd drive the cost of the tuition up. It's the tax cuts and Iraq war. I know, two of our daughters have been to college in that time, and every time I'd get a few hundred bucks more in tax return, the tuition would eat just as much (per semester, per daughter - so it's four times as much). Proper paperwork was required to get in-state tuition rates, or else we'd have to pay sheik rates, i.e. the outrageous rates for foreign students.
>>>>
>>>>OTOH, there's one bit of information that I should have kept a link to. You know the little detail about illegals, that they use fake SSNs? Well, the taxes are still paid on those fake numbers, so the practice actually feeds real money into the Social Security. The article put the total at $11 billion a year - of money that goes into the system but will never be claimed, because it was for fake numbers. It's amazing that this side of the equation is forgotten every time the expression "illegal immigrants" is mentioned.
>>>>
>>>>Actually, the algorithm to recognize a hotspot button pushing article: see if it makes the illegals look like blood-sucking parasites, without ever looking at the problem from their side.
>>>>
>>>>Hey, look at this: near the end of the article, it says "Community college executives said the admissions guidelines won't cost the state. Illegal immigrants must pay out-of-state tuition, $7,465 for a full class load, which is more than the actual cost of providing the education, $5,375, the officials said."... so they are charged more than it costs. So it's just business, colleges making a buck, which would otherwise go to South American universities. So how will this create a problem for you? Or did you read the heading only?
