Microsoft took .Net Remoting, Enterprise Services (COM+), ASMX Web Services, MSMQ, and Web Service Enhancements (WSE), which all had different APIs and integrated them into a single technology, WCF. The cool thing about WCF is that it is SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) based and you can change several settings at runtime via XML files.
