It's my impression that homicide correlates with population density. That is, the closer together people live, the more homicide you have. Since there's also a weak correlation between population density and gun laws (they're weaker in the wide open spaces), there's certainly an open question of what the cause is of the homicide rate.

The key point here is that correlation is not causation.
