From what I've been able to gather, pre-trial costs were about $60 - $70 million, including a LOT of forensic work. I understand that pretty much all the topsoil on the entire pig farm was hand-screened for human tissue traces and DNA evidence. Then this first trial has cost ~$40 million.

Lawyers, and the criminal justice system, have been involved :-/
