I assume you're talking about using a bar code scanner with a VFP app.

Most current bar code scanners used for PC input physically install as a so-called "keyboard wedge" (for PS/2-style keyboards):

- you unplug your keyboard from the computer
- you plug the scanner into the keyboard port on the computer
- there is a pass-through port for your keyboard on the scanner connector; you plug your keyboard into that

In this case the scanner acts as a secondary keyboard; scanning a bar code is exactly equivalent to typing in its decoded value. Just tab to or click on the field to which you want to input the bar code, scan the code, and its value will appear in the field. No drivers required.

One potential issue I don't have any experience with is the increasing prevalence of USB keyboards; some computers no longer have PS/2 keyboard or mouse ports at all. Bar code scanners with PS/2 connectors will not work directly with these computers. There are 2 possible workarounds:

- Brand new scanners may have USB interfaces, and appear to the computer as a second, completely separate keyboard
- PS/2 to USB converter cables are available. I've used one at a client with a Dell server that supports only USB keyboards, to connect it to a KVM switch, but it's not 100% reliable, it loses its connection once in a while.
