Now maybe the average person doesn't have the training that I have, but that could be changed

Not wanting to take a side ;-) but if you lived somewhere like New Zealand with gun control, you'd still have the same shotguns in the same closet. You would have passed your police inspection with flying colors. Gun control would not affect you any more than your driver's license affects you.

Gun Control would affect your dopey neighbor who keeps a loaded AK-47 under his bed and boasts about it when he drinks with buddies. His education would commence when he faces prosecution and confiscation or jail unless he secures the weapon sensibly. No doubt he'd curse and swear, but your whole street is safer if he is "persuaded" to secure his gun sensibly.

You mentioned earlier that Santa is going to bring you a handgun: he still could, except that you'd need to be an accredited member of an approved pistol club. In belonging to such a club, you'd get a chance to train or be trained regularly on safety issues and you'd be exposed to experts who may assist you to make your pistol better or safer.

I'm not arguing one way or another (especially since the majority of non-domestic firearm crime involves a stolen weapon) but I thought it was worth pointing out that gun control need not mean no guns at all.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us.
"
