She was fortunate. In most companies you can only carry over around 10 days. Anything over that is just lost for good. When I worked for the federal government, you could only carry over 10 days of vacation days but all of the sick days could be carried over indefinitely. Due to my years of service in the government I was earning 8 hours of vacation time every two weeks and 5 hours of sick time. It helped those who were seldom sick but at some point in the future may need a surgery of some kind and weeks of recuperation. You could also donate sick time to another employee who needed it. (The vacation and sick leave policies are the few things I miss about working for the government) Today, many companies combine all of your allowable sick days and vacation days into one single group of PTO to avoid employees using only the sick days and amazingly, it turns out to be fewer hours each year.

>>>I bet the employees at HQ in Paris get a better deal than that

>>>Absolutely.

>>>FWIW, generous policies lead to weird distortions. In at least one country, annual paid sick leave (separate from other leave entitlement) recently went from 5 days to 10 days annually. More than a few firms reported that workforce sickness suddenly doubled as well, with many workers reporting sick up to 100% of their paid sick leave entitlement but not a second over. ;-)

>>Oh, I know a number of people who are sure to get sick the maximum number of days each year.

>And then there are the people who have to be practically dead to take a day off. When my mother retired from teaching, she had a tremendous bank of unused days for which she was then paid (can't remember if it was 100% or something less). I think she may have had about a year's worths of unused sick/personal days.
