Well that simply doesn't happen here (Canada), at least not in the numbers you seem to predict. Yes, a knife usually replaces the gun, but just the idea of stabbing someone again and again and again has to be a deterrent to many who might be so inclined.

I also think your second category (not you personally, but many others) is the source of too many "accidental shootings" and domestic murders done in immediate anger.

There really is no way around the argument that there being so many guns in the U.S. in the hands of such a wide variety of people had the death rate from guns far far higher than any other civilized country in the world.
And there really ought to be a way to get some control of the situation.
Here anyone who wants to own a gun (rifle or handgun) can do so. They just have to EARN the right as well as have a reasonable mental health record. That's gotta be doable in the U.S. too.
