XP SP1 is the last version where you can still be sure that automatic updates will not be performed behind your back, and on which I know how to prevent the system's attempts to call home.

Well, I guess I wasn't very aware of the differences between XP SP1 and 2. I mainly just want to keep the computer secure and I feel XP SP2 with Norton Antivirus does that. I think you can configure the Microsoft Update option to notify you of updates and get your permission before installing. I don't, though I've thought of changing over to that method.
