Anybody know why I cannot do an APPEND FROM Excel any more?

It's an Excel 2000 spreadsheet and no matter what I try (APPEND FROM, IMPORT FROM, even a SQLCONNECT("Excel Files")) gives me an error. I get "Microsoft Excel file format is invalid" from IMPORT/APPEND, and the ODBC error says "External table is not in expected format".

Is this the beginnings of VFP's obsolescence?
