>As usual I am a bit behind the curve. But sooner or later I do get it and am about to plunge into the world of blogging. It seems to have reached critical mass, at least among those I respect. So I jumped on an el cheapo from GoDaddy.com for a domain name, site hosting, email, and blogging. It is the last one I am trying to figure out what to do with. I DO NOT want to put out one of those "This morning I had cereal for breakfast and then read the paper" kind of blogs. But I'm not sure what to focus on. FoxPro? (No). Writing? Sports? General opinions?

I had the same questions (and I'm still not sure if I made the best decision). I do a lot of VFP and .NET development. I really thought hard about separating the content into two blogs. For me, since I use both, there is a ton of overlap; maintaining two blogs sounded like too much work - does this content belong in this blog, or that one, or both? If someone subscribes to both, will they be annoyed with "duplicate" content?

I think I may scare (or bore?) away most VFP developers because of lot of my content recently has been .NET related. I've tried to keep a balance but it's difficult since I tend to post about whatever I'm currently working on (or that I find interesting). I ultimately may end up limiting my audience because of it (too much X, not enough Y). I think I'm OK with that. If it happens to help even one person, that's pretty cool. It's also been interesting to see how people have found my site through Google - I'm surprised at where it turns up with certain search terms, esp. since it's only been up a few months.

Ultimately, I think you just need to find whatever suits you and decide what your goal is. Also realize you may end up losing some people (and hopefully gaining others) as your figure out what you're most interested in talking about. I >do< think you need a focus, however.
