If you want the control and the label to behave together... why not have them in a container? The container could have a shape which would cover them when needed - flip the shape's zorder and visible - and may have the color quite close to the background color, maybe a slightly lighter border... you can give it any visual representation you want, and only have to flip a property of the container.
