Mike,

>Also, I would think that a person who sells software or software development services for a living would be a little more sensitive to this issue. I used to be bad, but have cleaned up my act and can't honestly think of one illegal bit of software running in my home.

O.K. I'll bite. This thing is not black and white.

If I purchase a Dutch version of MS office, why do I need to purchase another licence if I want to switch to the english version (true story) ?

With MSDN once the license said that you can install on any computer as long as you are the only developer using it. Does this mean I can install it at every client's server to do some debugging if neccesary?? If so, If I'm sick and a colleage takes over my job, does this violate the licences ?? What about my neighbout typing a letter in word on my computer?? If I got one license of VFP and another developer wants to develop something on my development server in VFP but holds a licence of VFP, is he violating the licence agreement, or can he install his instance on my development server?? So, if a customer is testing my software and is testing the mailmerge functionality in word or excell do I need a licence for that user, even though that user already is covered by a second entity ? If I got a licence saying one concurrent developer can use the product. How would I enforce that on a Terminal Server ? Can I check and prohibit two or more users using the same product at the same time?

Look it is very simple if you're the only developer in the company, but things get quite complicated when having servers in three countries and a pool of developers, testers, clients and other people logging in at those servers.

In my opinion it is up to the software vendors to do something to prevent violating the licences. For example I could launch 5 TS session and could start any software multiple times without any restrictions. So there is nothing to prevent 10 people logging on to my server and luanch more sessions of a particular product than the license allows. How on earth can I prevent that ?

My experience with crystal reports licences are horrific. I don't understand half of what they mean and I'm not sure ab out the other half either. Then they change the licences about each and every version. I've tried to contact seagate at the time to clear up some issues in regards to licencing and never got an answer.

>>The EU sanctions have nothing to do with copyrights on VFP, but rather bundling things with Windows and not publishing all the APIs. In the end, you have to decide if it's worth the risk.

>>>LOL, After its defeat by the EU government, I doubt that its juristriction reaches beyond the US. Not that we do not have the licences, but I'm not holding a tight licence administration and am not tracking and spending a lot of time on licence agreements. After trying to understand EULA's from MS and crystal reports I just gave up. I really don't care whether two or three developers are using the two CR licences concurrently: It is about impossible to track. Also some clients are accessing our servers and using our product and MS office to evaluate. Now I do know I've got a number of MS word licences but the last thing I'm doing is tracking that at a certain time I've got enough licences.
