Primaries can be strange too. Here in Utah, you must be a registered Republican to vote in the Republican primary, but anyone can vote in the Democratic primary.

The republican party is a straight straw poll and reports actual numbers, but the democrats do it differently and only ever report percentages. There can be a lot of 'finaggling' (and dirty tricks) to get the votes of any candidate who initially gets less than 15%. For example, if Clinton were to only get 14%, their group could tell the Edwards group 'Give us two people to make 15% or we will send all of us over to Obama' which is amazing and such things have occurred in the past. As far as I know, nothing like that occurred today, but I really don't know.
