Yes, that likely would have done the trick.

But my issue was that pre-2007 (and its fancy ribbon) the 'page number' and 'total pages' were each directly available from the header/footer toolbar.
In my opinion, hiding the "Page n of t" option under a dropdown called "Page number" is unhelpful. And you should see the other options also hidden under that label!!!!!
