The North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund Commission approved a grant of $235,000 about four years ago to help Tar Heel farmers establish truffle orchards to replace lost tobacco income. Nearly 50 farmers have taken advantage of the grants and are giving it a shot.

After a 25 million investment into truffle-producing 200 acres (who knew hazelnut and oak trees were so expensive?), an acre of the trees can yield as much as $40,000 in a year.
