Not meaning to pick on you in particular, Bob, but "number" and "amount" are not synonyms. Number is for things you can count ("number of students"), while amount is for things you can't count ("amount of information").

While we're at it, use "fewer" for number ("fewer students") and "less" for amount ("less information").
