I looked up all the controls that I'm using, there were just a few. I tried your workaround on my client's machine. I removed the gibberish and pasted the path text to it from the default value. After doing this to all of the controls, I re-launched the application. Unfortunately, windows installer ran and it inserted the encrypted text in front of the path I pasted.
