As I'm of the generation that was taught in elementary school to get under the desk "when" not "if" nuclear war came ...

Don't think things are particulary tense in that direction right now - relatively speaking. And remember, nuclear first-strike has *always* been on the table. But in the arena of preventing proliferation there are a lot of options to be exhausted first ( Just watch the Israelis if Iran gets too close )
