it is possible to run both. In fact, we are debating that now with one of our two major management systems. We are looking at it with the idea of progressively migrating the system to running entirely on MySQL as the database but keeping VFP as the front end. Once the data is entirely on MySQL we will look at an alternative front end.

The big problem with running both DBs is in syncing them during a backup. You MUST have a complete copy of both at a given exact point in time. If you have a new customer in MySQL and an invoice in VFP but don't grab the customer during the backup because he was not yet in MySQL when you backed it up first then you are screwed.
