Kind advice, but you must never have lived there.

Don't look anyone in the eye.
Don't speak to anyone.
When on the bus/subwasy, stare out the window, at your paper, or at the signs above the windows.

That's just the basics.

It is not easy to make friends in NYC. Coworkers are the best bet.
