I went through a similar accident last year - broken thigh, two knee operations to pin the break, 6 months of physical therapy.
Two words of advice:
1. You will really appreciate the meaning of the word "understatement" when the therapy people tell you, "This make cause you a little discomfort".
2. It's worth the effort. It took me 6 months but I walk without a limp and my doctor gave me a "5 year/50,000 mile" warranty on parts and labor.
