>>>No its ok Peter and Jean where just being rude.
>>>Imagine a room full of people having a conversation
>>>where suddenly two people slip into another language for a short (private) chat. What could they be saying ? Complimentary, I think not.
>>
>>Actually, I used to spend a lot of time with Levantines. They would sometimes switch languages four times in the same sentence <g> Never really bothered me, doesn't bother me here unless the message is to me.
>>
>>Have to admit Dutch leaves me kind of cold as a language and doesn't inspire me to want to learn it ( probably also because they all seem to speak English as well as I do and spell it better )
>>
>>But I encourage any Catalan speakers to post in Catalan. I don't understand that either but it actually looks like a language I *should* understand <bg>

>I don't do language. I should but I'm lazy on that one. I love the way they sound and usually manage to navigate around other countries by sign and mistake. Which is not a bad way to go.

If I lived that close to the continent I'd feel very motivated to improve my French, Spanish and Italian. ( unlike my old English grandmother who repeatedly told me that as long as you had 'a good English tongue in your head' you coud go anywhere. of course she also believed all 'foreigners' actually understood English - they were just hard of hearing - so you just had to talk louder <bg>

I actually got into computer programming because somebody started talking about 'computer languages' and that just somehow fascinated me.

I just think of it all as magic words.

Charles Hankey

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
