I don't know much about Obama but if that is the case it may have something to do with the particularly difficult status of bi-racial kids when he was growing up. Difficult to know just where you fit in a society that likes to see people as part of groups rather than as individuals. ( historically fueled by xenophobia but more recently encouraged by identity politics )

Today, I think it is a little different. My grand-daughter is 13 now and jokingly refers to herself as a 'half-rican American' Her mom, Lisa, looks like you and her dad, Michael, looks like Mike Cannon on the Las Vegas TV show. ( Dad's the Marine corps officer ) She - Nina - looks like an advertisement for humans.

They live in Stafford, VA ( near Quantico ) so with the number of military in the area multi-racial kids are not at all rare and while high school is as cliquish as ever it isn't more about race than any of the other stuff.

It is interesting to watch the world she is growing up in vs the one I grew up in. ( the first black person I ever talked to was my freshman year in college - she was Hailee Selassie's niece )

The Romeo and Juliette / West Side Story stuff when I was in high school was my Catholic girlfriend's family being appalled at my WASPness. ( when there were really so many other things about me they should have found more disturbing )

>CORRECT! :o) Both are descended from Polygamists.

>What I actually found interesting is learning that Obama, who has such a huge following across the country from all races and backgrounds, was extremely extremely anti-white for most of his life. He even wrote about it - it's in his book and his memoirs. All of his recent statements have been decrying racism. I hope it is a maturity that brought about the change and not politics...

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
