>Walter, there's no comparison between the U.S. using the death penalty for murder, and islamic countries that stone people to death. Stoning to death occurs for such "crimes" as adultery (or even belief of adultery) or renouncing Islam. It's obscene for anyone to compare the two.

AS dragan says.. Its about levels. In china you can be executed for much lower crimes (e.g. drug dealing) but not for adultery etc. And there are countries which technically still have the death penalty but did not execute them for 10 years or more. Then there are countries which still hold the death penalty for extreme cases. The US is somewhere in the middle. So where do you draw the line. And WHO does draw the line ?

Of course any american would feel they draw the correct line. But that is quite subjective isn't it (5% of the world population)? To me the USA should be ashamed of itself to be the only western country still practising the death penalty on a regular basis.
