On that more serious note, the elected politician is a public servant, so she's in the pay of Joe Q Public, no problem there. It's when Joe Q Public isn't this guy's boss, when the politician uses his money to satisfy someone else who also paid but more directly, or when the main purpose of the expenditure is to make the politician look better, regardless of whether what the actual effects were.
