Dennis,
IMHO it all depends. I have forms which have more than one grandchild. Generally it helps to make a consensus on the design with customers.

For example most of my customers love the idea of having as much as of their daily work's data on a single screen. They don't like extra clicks to open other forms. Screen real estate vs simplicity UI design is maybe the most challenging part of an application.
Afterall I know I'm not a good designer but plumber:)
