I will consider any politician who creates a National Day of Fasting to be a posturing, bloviating, cynical fool.

However - protecting the weak, comforting the sick and feeding the hungry are privileges and obligations for all who would seek to be worthy of their own good fortune.

My favorite charity is our local Cleveland Food Bank. It is a volunteer organization which collects money and food to provide assistance to people who otherwise would have less than they need. All the money, all the food, goes where it should.

Twice a year there are food drives where supermarkets all have $1, $5 and $10 tear off coupons you can throw in with your groceries at checkout and donate that way. They also have $10 bags of grocery staples you can buy and then drop in a box after checkout. I would like to see this happen all year around. I is an easy way to remember, as one checks out gourmet cheese, sushi and good wine, that to some people a big box of spaghetti and baby formula can be a real delicacy. ( of course they accept donations of money, food, and time all year around - if anyone would like the address I'd be happy to provide - though I would bet there is one in your town too. If not - start one. )

This isn't the job of politicians. This is the job of all of us.

Don't fast. That's a gesture, and it's about you. Feed the poor - that's about them.

Though a good deal is too strange to be believed, nothing is too strange to have happened.
- Thomas Hardy

Half the harm that is done in this world is due to people who want to feel important. They don't mean to do harm-- but the harm does not interest them. Or they do not see it, or they justify it because they are absorbed in the endless struggle to think well of themselves.

-- T. S. Eliot
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on what to have for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.
- Ben Franklin

Pardon him, Theodotus. He is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature.
