We alway run this way and use an archive/delete/pack when space management is required. "Pack" is our pack--we archive all non active and pending data to an offline device (tape whatever), copy active and pending to a replicated table, switch names resync reindex (via Stonefields tools now) and delete the orginal.
This has helped even in situations where the customer didn't care if deleted information was purged when we had to backtrack on odd data problems. Having an complete data 'state' trail helped a bunch. It's just a style thing I guess, started doing this in other environments more years ago than I admit.
