Update: I'm behind. I just saw that Bill set the record straight.

It wasn't banning the recruiters from the campus, they were banned from the downtown of the city itself.

IIRC, the news bit was about the UC Berkley telling, officially, the marine recruiters that they cannot set up shop on the campus, period. Just like many high schools all over the country have done already. And specially after all the cases of recruiters breaking the rules to achieve their quotas, all the cases of outright dirty propaganda used in the process etc. (two points here - I don't care which branch of the armed forces did what, they're all the same to me, being armed forces; and if they somehow think that "no soliciting" doesn't apply to them and had somehow made themselves generally exempt, any institution is within their rights to say "no, you're not exempt").

Remember how Jay got fired up about illegal immigrants attending college in NC, even though they were paying commercial rate for it, and even though they were actually a way for the colleges to recoup from financial losses inflicted upon them by current gov't (by cutting funds going back to states from federal tax, which then had to combine raising state taxes and cutting funding for education, among other things). So something done by current government has a side effect that is somehow blamed on the other side, and the righteous get a shot of adrenalin.
