Nope. It's for real. Look up the SS Shenandoah. It was a confederate ship that was commanded to cripple the New England whaling industry. Because it was operating up in the arctic, they didn't get word that the war was over until well after it actually was, so they were still capturing and sinking whaling vessels. It fired the last shot near the Aleutian Islands.
