Actually, I saw that one in a post by Mike Helland years ago, but didn't advertise it, just looked up the source to see how he did it. But then it's a pain in the donkey to type so many shifted keys (specially on my keyboard layout, where it's right-alt+comma for < and right-alt+point for > - not significantly harder than shift, but somewhat clumsy). I'd just say the placement of asterisks is fuc*ing wrong in most of the cases.
