It looks like the players in this industry now think that Mom&Pop businesses deserve big(ger)-company data integrity and security. It'll be interesting to see how it goes when the newer freeware databases are compared to the ASP model that Google and MS now openly describe as the future they want for small business.
FWIW, last week I visited a Fremont facility that maintains over 5000 servers for lots of small and middle-sized companies who pay the firm to lease machines and to maintain them 24/7. They're booming. People who do the sums are attracted to this sort of model, no doubt about it.
"... They ne'er cared for us
yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses
crammed with grain; make edicts for usury, to
support usurers; repeal daily any wholesome act
established against the rich, and provide more
piercing statutes daily, to chain up and restrain
the poor. If the wars eat us not up, they will; and
there's all the love they bear us."
-- Shakespeare: Coriolanus, Act 1, scene 1
