You are right ... as I seem to recall, the DataFlex app was not very fast, even though it ran on some sort of little mini computer with terminals and nothing much else running. Today people want more instant gratification; to wait for one screen after another to appear would not be acceptable.

And this is the "problem" with migrating from Foxpro. It's just plain fast.

For all of its supposed defects, at my last job they spent about two years and something like 28 million dollars to try to replace it with something they were told was "better" ... and they had to scrap the new app because it was not as fast as the Fox app. You see, the Fox apps ran in a 24-hour cycle and often had a window of mere minutes in order to run. No slowdown was acceptable. Not at my current location they are likewise replacing the Fox app because somebody told them something else was "better." OK I will not go into the old discourse about Fox. Whether it is or isn't this or that doesn't matter. I'm just starting to be amused at the insanity of it all.

I once read an article about a company that truly set out to determine the best software platform for a particular software function. They ignored the marketing hype and finally decided to create the solution ... as a Firefox browser plug-in. At least I can respect that. I just cannot make myself jump on the latest bandwagon just because some marketing literature says it's the best. I should have bought the magazine ... I never found the article again.
