I do not think electability really depends on race or gender in the US, although those cards can and very likely will be played by candidates or special interest groups.

In this election, the fact that Hillary and Obama are attacking each other and both have significant voter base is the reason neither may be elected.
Republicans have made up their mind, and although Huckabee will cause some problems McCain will have a fairly united party come general election time.
