I am never rude to them, although I'm not buying what they're selling. That can't be easy going door to door. Many people really do slam the door in their face. A polite "no thank you" doesn't cost me anything. It doesn't bother me much if they ask, as long as they don't get pushy about it. Same approach with telemarketers. That's another job I wouldn't want so I have a certain amount of sympathy for those doing it.
