Limewire is one of the most notorious culprits for viruses and bandwidth hogging... be careful.

You can choose not to be a sharer, but still get files. Works great for me and I've never seen anything beyond the $20 that I had to pay for. Not sure what you saw, but maybe it has changed since I got it.
