I grew up in NYC where the generic term was soda.

My brother-in-law grew up in Upstate New York where the generic term was pop. I found that to be true during my years in Iowa as well.

My wife grew up all over, but the basic roots of her family are southern Nebraska. Their generic term is coke and she has the same story there as you had in GA,
