>>>>Talking about lights and LEDs: Notice how many flashlights and those "head-lights" feature powerful LEDs nowadays. In order to look modern nowadays house have to have those halogen lights, but I find them a PITA as they keep blowing (AND give off so much heat) and are dear to replace. Recently, in an electrical wholesalers, I noticed some LED lights in the same housings as the halogen. I asked the guy how long they last in comparison. He said like forever. I forgot to ask if they can be put in existing halogen set-ups. Anyone know?

>>>Does anyone care? Lose the halogen. I got a couple for $15 each, used them for a few months for some inhouse picture-taking and then just went back to neons - far easier to balance.

>>What do you mean "Does anyone care?"? That's the very reason why I'm asking, as my words make clear, I would like to lose the halogens. But i need to know if they're compatible with the halogen fittings. For instance, are the LEDs stepped down in the same way.

>>And neons? I've never knowingly seen them as a light source over here, except in the coloured advertising signs, and as flashy decor.

>>>The expensive part on the halogen is the bulb, and the heat resistant protective glass. The rest is just unnecessary ;).

>We've replaced almost every standard light bulb in our house, office, and garage with florescent bulbs (the curly ones that fit in the same space as a regular bulb - direct replacement). They use much less power (maybe 1/3 the wattage of a comparable bulb), have a nice clean light (no flicker like old style florescents), generate much less heat, and last a LONG time. They are considerably more expensive than incandescent bulbs, but since we started using them a couple of years ago we have not had to replace one. Now they have ones to replace outdoor floodlights too - that makes my life easier since I don't have to head up a ladder several times a year to replace outside lights.

Hi William

Every CFL bulb I've tried gives me headaches. I'm holding out for LEDs, and would already be buying them if they would be marketted so I could determine which ones match which wattage of incandescent bulbs.
