I usually see a myriad of topics discussed here but not very often is source control brought up. Source Control is the very bedrock of software development andI am curious to see what other peoples thoughts and product of choice are.

For me I use Team Foundation Server for the main job. it is a great system but is expensive and far from novel to implement. It is certainly not the tool of choice for small to medium shops.

For my small consulting company I have tried several tools:
1. Visual Source Safe
2. Team Foundation Server
2. Subversion
4. SourceGear Vault

I eventually went with subversion as was the most flexible and and inexpensive solution and works better for me than VSS. Team Foundation was overkill for my small shop, Vault is a great product but I dont want the headache of having to maintain an additional sql server that is exposed. I found cvsdude.com which offers a broad range of subversion hosting options for a very reasonable price. For @ $20 monthly I have 2 gig repository with the option of buying more space and availability of my code anywhere I have a pc. I use ToroiseSVN (open source) and VisualSVN to integrate into the VS 2008 shell. I highly recommend this set up. It has been working great for me.

The only shell integration for the VFP IDE I have seen is Source Safe and it is so bad it might as well not be there. With TortoiseSVN I have Subversion as my SCM system for VFP projects but I wish it was integrated into the VFP IDE. Am I missing a good VFP client? We dont do any new devlopement in VFP anymore so this isn't a big issue, THE VS 2008 integration is really good.

So, what are you folks using for Source Control? Pros? Cons?
