He's been fighting cancer since he was a kid. It's how he lost his sight originally, and he's been going for checkups every 6 months for most of his life. He's had multiple operations over the years. In spite of it all, he was always up and his shows were filled with joy and energy. I've seen him live a few times at jazz festivals, and the entire audience always came out smiling.
