I've found SourceSafe and VFP to be pretty slow, but 5 minutes is quite bad. What kind of network are you using?
There are a few things you can try:
- If you have a virus checker running on your machine, try disabling it or at least setting it to check only executables and not all files.
- Make sure you've installed the latest service pack for VFP and for SourceSafe (you can download or order Visual Studio Service Pack 3 which fixes both products from
www.microsoft.com/vstudio/sp).
- There's a tool included with SourceSafe that will clean up your SourceSafe database. You should run that.
- If you have a lot of projects in your VSS database, try creating a new database and just adding your new project to it.
- VSS 6.0 is due out next week. I've heard that its performance is much better than 5.0.
- I sometimes run two instances of VFP. One for development where I keep the project open all the time and the other to test my application.
Good luck. Hope this helps!
>We are using (trying to use) Visual SourceSafe, and it´s killing us with its slowness; doing MODIFY PROJECT takes 5 minutes or more.
>What´s more, we are converting a thousand-module project from FP 2.6, and currently we have only about a hundred modules in the VFP project now; we dread working with VSS when all the modules are in the project!
