My daughter is driving a 2003 that was once her older sister's car. Her sister drove it like a demon for 4 years and only replaced the oil periodically. Never saw a day of service in its life until we took it in a couple of weeks ago. 91,000 miles and I took it in for the 700.00 60,000 service (a few things on the list are important like the fuel filter and timing belt) that cost 900.00 because it needed an alignment and the brake fluid replaced (and a couple of other things not part of the service). When we brought it in, I was very pleasantly surprised to learn her uncle is the manager there now (his dad owns the dealership). :o) They did everything on the list (plus more) and from now on, when her car breaks down or needs a service he drives it to work that day. Too bad I don't have an uncle like that! :o)

>It's not just Jiffy Lubes. About three weeks ago I took my Dodge pickup into a dealership to have the transmission oil changed and check an oil leek. The tech came back with I need to replace the power steering assembly for $800.00. I didn't believe him so I went home and checked it out myself. Turned out to be a bade hose clamp. $2.00 hose clamp fixed the problem. I just wonder how often this happens?

>On a similar note, I would not have a jiffy (or other) lube place change the automatic transmission oil. Most automatic transmissions have a filter inside the pan and some times flushing the oil will stir up the metal filings in the bottom of the pan and plug the filter.

>My brother had this done to his Mitsubishi van with excess of 100000 mikes. A week latter his transmission went bad. He took his van to an Aamco shop an they wanted 1800.00 to repair the transmission. I suggested that he have them try to change the oil filter and see what happens. He drove the van for another three years before getting rid of it. Don't trust any of these shops. Get a second opinion expensive repairs especially from dealerships.
