It should work. When we made the trip four years ago, we flew Philly to Paris, then took the train to London, then on up to Oxford. We drove north, and flew home from Glasgow.
My recent experience is that so-called open jaw tickets are not significantly more expensive than standard round-trips. Sometimes they're even cheaper.
