I found some database files in MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data. I found there AdventureWorks, for example, which I also don't see in SSMS. However, the database I was looking for is not there. I guess originally I was just connecting to the sever too and didn't notice that.
If it's not broken, fix it until it is.
