I think it takes a mixture of concrete examples, theoretical reading materials, experimenting with the software, and asking questions of humans. And each person has their own particular mixture that optimizes their learning experience.
I sometimes learn things from the answers to her questions.
And these questions are better than the silly personality based "debates about technology" that sometimes go on. :)
